Urbanization processes are almost always connected to an increased density of the building structures. For a site development in zone W3, the building and zoning regulations of Thalwil allow a slight increase of density from 0.6 to 0.66, however a more decisive change of the maximum building heights from 10.5 to 16.5 metres with regard to the height system and, thus, to five full storeys.
The planning strategy is to fathom a better arrangement and design of large open spaces within a structured building development characterized by individual, detached buildings on a slope in Gattikon, which are strung along the topography of the access roads. The five new buildings increase the interval and, thus, also the vistas between the individual volumes. Their five-storey structure not only changes the urban scale of the somewhat quiet neighbourhood as to its height, but also the location of the residential buildings directly on Rütiwiesenstrasse. Their one-and-a-half storey entrances allow you to enter the buildings from the public space of the street without having to cross barren garage driveways.
The Modernist demand for lighting, insolation, and a view, which has found its expression in the ingenious, Y-shaped floor plans, is – unlike Steiner's Zurich and Backström/Reinius's Stockholm – privileged in Gattikon due to its hillside location lit by the evening sun.
