Freilager Complex Zurich - Student housing

From an urban-planning point of view, the students’ hall on the Freilager site inserts itself as the fourth longhouse into the parataxis of Part A by Rolf Mühletaler. The Perret-type aspect of the projecting balcony is taken up again, and adopted on all sides, it corresponds to the genuine isotropy of the slab structure. The colour gradations and delicate profiling of the pre-fabricated balcony ceiling faces emphasizes the superimposed expression of the building volume. The recessed wooden façade panels show oscillating colours with the change of light.

The complex floor organization strives to offer a structure of the greatest possible advantage, which is ideally suited to the demands of an unconventional form of housing. All flats follow the same principle: the large and flowing living and dining areas will each have a large number of defined individual rooms attached to them. The structure responds to the density of the immediate free spaces with duplex flats in the middle and a link of all flats to two cardinal directions.
